Leicester boxing photography is at its best when the moments are real.

There are bigger shows. Louder venues. Brighter lights and bigger names.
But sometimes it’s the local fight nights that carry the most honest stories.

Friday’s Novice Show, organised by Rocky’s Combat Gym in Leicester, wasn’t about polished records, media noise or perfectly calculated boxing.
And maybe that’s exactly why it had something special about it.

This article is part of my Leicester boxing photography series documenting the Novice Show organised by Rocky’s Combat Gym at Leicester Sports Centre.

This night was about first steps into the ring, first real nerves and that moment when a fighter is left alone with the adrenaline kicking in.

Young lads who, an hour earlier, probably looked like normal kids hanging around after school. Women stepping into the ring with serious heart and determination. Fighters who heard that first bell and forgot about everything outside those ropes.

And that’s where the best frames started to appear.

Black and white photography has something brutally honest about it. It strips away the colour but leaves the emotion. There’s nowhere to hide — only light, movement, sweat and people pushing through pressure, exhaustion and their own limits.

That’s why I’ve always had a soft spot for black & white boxing photography.

But this night doesn’t exist only in monochrome. Most of the material was shot in colour, and a lot of those images carry just as much energy and atmosphere in a completely different way.

Colour shows the heat of the fight.
Black & white shows the weight of it.

And that contrast is what fascinates me the most.

During this event I wasn’t interested only in who won or lost. I wanted to catch the split-second moments — the impact, the tension before a shot lands, the explosion of movement and the emotion that disappears a second later and never comes back.

That’s why most of these photographs were taken right up close to the action. Timing mattered. Light mattered. That one exact moment mattered.

Because real boxing rarely looks polished. Most of the time it’s messy, exhausting, emotional and beautiful all at once.

And that’s exactly what this night was.

Novice Show wasn’t a night of perfection.
It was a night of character.

For me, Leicester boxing photography is about capturing real emotion, movement and character inside the ring.

And that’s why these photographs mean far more to me than just pictures from a fight night. 👊
